GVSU
Violin Intensive

July 29 - August 2, 2024
9:30am-3:45pm

In this violin intensive, you will devote a week to refine your violin technique and repertoire in an intimate and focused setting alongside 5 other high school and college violinists. Through daily private lessons with Dr. Jap and structured practice sessions, you will engage in concentrated and focused work. Each day concludes with a performance class where you will have the chance to showcase your progress and practice performing in front of your peers in an intimate setting.

Who is this for?

This violin intensive is designed for high school students interested in exploring music studies at the Grand Valley State University music program, or for those eager to immerse themselves in the collegiate music student experience! There will be some GVSU violinists participating as well.

Why should I apply?

There will only be 5 violinists in this seminar. This limited number ensures a more concentrated learning environment, allowing each participant to receive daily personalized musical and technical guidance. Students will learn how to practice and perform well.

Daily Schedule

What a day looks like for you

9:15 to 9:50am - Seminar: Topic of the Day

What you'll learn as a group

As a motivated high school violinist, you will find this supportive program inspiring and invigorating. We will start each day off as a group with an in-depth learning topic. Topics will be on learning how to listen critically, practice efficiently, prepare for performances/auditions, etc, led by Dr. Jap and invited guest speakers. In addition, we will end each day off as a group with a performance class, where you will play an assigned work (or excerpt) in front of other violinists. While individual practice is crucial, learning to perform is equally essential.

What you'll learn as a individual

In our lesson, we'll dive into the piece you're currently working on. If you don't have one yet, we will assign you repertoire before we get started. We'll start by focusing on technique, then move on to fine-tuning your repertoire. In our first lesson, we'll chat about the specific techniques we'll be honing, set some goals for the week, figure out your practice schedule, and cover anything else you want to bring up.
